These guidelines give a comprehensive review of existing web accessibility guidelines before beginning a discussion of accessibility techniques specific to online cultural content. The document outlines key considerations for creating inclusive online cultural content as well as for translating existing content to other modalities to make it accessible. Suggestions and guidance are provided to the reader around the concept of modality translation for each kind of translation specific to the online environment. Techniques for moving content between audio, visual, tactile and language modalities are discussed and explained at length.

This Companion Document may be used alone or in conjunction with the General Guidelines document. The document reviews existing captioning techniques before beginning a discussion of enhanced captioning techniques that utilize new technology to enrich the caption user’s interaction with the material. Enhanced caption can utilize images, text styling, additional caption and annotation tracks that provide more information about the audio than just the words spoken. The document provides specific information about CapScribe, the enhanced captioning tool developed in the CNICE project, as well as suggestions for creating more inclusive captions.

The document gives a comprehensive review of the intricacies of real-time ASL interpretation and provides anecdotal and case studies of related work carried out in the CNICE project. The document concludes with an overview of the techniques and guidelines discussed throughout the document.
